The Delhi Bar Association (Tis Hazari) has officially exempted advocates from wearing black coats during the summer months, citing climatic conditions and legal provisions. According to a notice issued on May 24, the exemption will be in place from May 16 to September 30.
This relaxation is in line with Rule 49(1)(gg) of the Advocates Act, 1961, which allows the Bar Council of India to frame dress code rules, including climate-based adjustments. The notice clarified that while black coats are not mandatory during this period, lawyers must continue to follow the rest of the prescribed dress code.
The exemption applies specifically to advocates appearing in courts subordinate to the Delhi High Court. The Bar Association urged members to maintain decorum in court despite the temporary dress relief.
The decision comes as Delhi continues to face extreme summer temperatures, prompting institutions to make heat-conscious policy changes.
